The Real Purpose of the Seatbelt Button
That small plastic piece is called a seatbelt stop button (or retainer button). Its main job is to stop the metal latch plate—the piece you click into the buckle—from sliding too far down the seatbelt.
Without this button, every time you remove your seatbelt, the metal latch would slide down the belt and fall near the floor or the side of the seat. Then when you get back in the car, you would have to reach down and search for it before buckling up.
Why This Small Button Is Important
Even though it’s tiny, this button makes using your seatbelt much easier.
